Reimu: The Hakurei Shrine was going to need some repairing again. This time, the one who had damaged the building seemed to be none other than Sanae Kochiya, the shrine maiden of the Moriya shrine. Seeing the girl taunt her and then run off, the enraged Reimu gives chase, clearing out some of the local youkai until her path becomes blocked by one of the crimson spirits that had been floating about.
After defeating the apparition, Reimu finally catches up to Sanae, who suddenly stops running away and instead attacks her rival while accusing her of dropping by at the Moriya shrine and leaving a hole on the roof there. Confused by this, the Hakurei shrine maiden defeats her foe and demands a compensation, only to hear a denial and another accusation. The two soon realize that they had both been tricked, and then set out to find whoever had done all this. They find Marisa on the way, all three of them wanting to solve this strange incident while also noticing that the sky is turning more crimson with each passing moment.
Marisa: It was clear that something was wrong in Gensokyo once again as Marisa walked around the Forest of Magic in search of some mushrooms for her usual experiments, only to meet a swarm of fairies and lesser youkai attacking her out of nowhere. Fending them off, she is soon met by a crimson horizon and a similarly colored spirit in the form of a large ghostly orb attacking her out of nowhere.
Blasting it away after a short battle, Marisa soon comes under attack by the combined forces of Alice and Patchouli, both of whom are accusing her of raiding their houses and attacking them earlier. Forced to fight off the two magicians and explain herself afterwards, she soon moves over to look for Reimu, finding her friend and the shrine maiden Sanae investigating a similar incident, as someone had impersonated both of them and pitted them against one another. Perhaps this mysterious shapeshifter had tricked Alice and Patchouli as well while also letting all these spirits run amok, thought the magician while following the two shrine maidens.
Sanae: Something had gone very wrong on Youkai Mountain, as Sanae was woken up by both Kanako and Suwako yelling out loud to her about an attack on the shrine by Reimu Hakurei. Having already been forced to deal with some of the hostile crimson spirits that had been lingering around the mountain yesterday, the shrine maiden now went on to hunt down her rival and get fix the damage she had done. On the way, Sanae runs into a rampant swarm of fairies led by a large orb of crimson light.
Realizing that the crimson spirits are making the local youkai unusually hostile, she exterminates the being and carries on her way, eventually encountering Reimu Hakurei herself. After a short spellcard duel with her and arguments being thrown from both sides, the two shrine maidens realize that they had been tricked by some kind of shapeshifter or illusionist into attacking one another. The two soon find Marisa and let her come along, all three of them hoping to find out what was going on.
Reimu, Sanae and Marisa decide to team up to investigate the odd incident in Gensokyo, and begin their investigation by delving deeper into the Forest of Magic, where they find the fairies and spirits still running rampant. Clearing the way, they soon run into a mysterious youkai dressed like a cowboy and holding a gun in hand.
The youkai, named Abigail Bradley, introduces herself and then makes a statement about her boredom before attacking the heroines at a blinding speed. However, the battle is interrupted as she suddenly becomes startled and flees, leaving the three to clear out the rest of the unruly monsters in the area. However, to their surprise, another being does the job for them, and introduces herself as a goddess from the distant west, the winged serpent Ichtaca.
Reimu: Confronting the mystical winged serpent, Reimu assumes that she is the one behind the troublesome events that have been unfolding lately. Ichtaca denies this, and offers to tell the shrine maiden what she knows if she has a quick spellcard duel with her. Defeating Ichtaca in spite of the goddess' odd and mystical list of attacks, she is then told to go to the base of Youkai Mountain, where an ally of the real culprit was last seen relaxing near a bunch of hot springs. However, she warns Reimu to be careful, as the being was reputed to bring bad luck and death to those around her.
Marisa: Curious about the nature of the being in front of her, Marisa decides to ask her about any treasures or wisdom she might possibly have, as well as to why she chose to help her out with the youkai. Offering the answers to these questions as well as a direction towards the real cause of the problem in exchange for a duel, Ichtaca battles against Marisa, but is ultimately defeated. Though pleased with the duel, Marisa frowned a bit as the goddess had no treasures or wisdom to share, but she did know of a youkai near the base of Youkai Mountain who knew more about the magic that was turning the sky crimson in color, as well as about those who were using it.
Sanae: Introducing herself to the winged serpent goddess as she noticed the lack of an immediate attack, Sanae soon demands an explanation to her presence in the forest. Ichtaca offers to help the Sanae if the shrine maiden were to have a spellcard duel with her as she wishes to test her resolve. After the shrine maiden defeats her, the goddess advises her to head towards the base of Youkai Mountain, where a dangerous youkai related to the oni resides. This being, named Manami Shimizu, is an old friend of the real culprit, according to Ichtaca.
Hearing of a youkai named Manami Shimizu, who supposedly knows about the people behind the recent events, the three heroines venture towards the base of Youkai Mountain, though the way is blocked by not only some mid-level youkai, but also a gathering of angry crimson spirits and some fairies following them around.
Exterminating them as well, the heroines are soon confronted by an imposing youkai that seemed to be an ushi-oni attacks them. After a short clash, the being smiles in an odd manner and congratulates her foe while introducing herself as Manami Shimizu.
Reimu: Finding the youkai's smug expression rather annoying, Reimu immediately demands to know about the ones spreading the crimson veil over the sky, to which the ushi-oni responds with a challenge: If Reimu can give Manami a good fight, she'll tell her about the ones who are behind this plot. Accepting the challenge, the shrine maiden attacks the oni-like being, though she soon notices that her spellcards not only deal with shadows and the element of water, but also cause misfortune to those around them.
Despite this disadvantage, Reimu defeats Manami, though the ushi-oni seems to have deliberately held back a bit. However, this fact is placed aside as she tells the tale of the sisters Soga no Kuniko and Soga no Mariko, who had been turned into youkai and plotted their revenge on Gensokyo for being rejected by humans and youkai alike. While she considers the two to be her friends, she worries their current plot might be a bit too extreme and will do more harm than good to them and to everyone else. She finishes by telling her of the abandoned shrine the Soga sisters reside in, located between the Forest of Magic and Youkai Mountain. Reimu takes this information and leaves with it, though Manami states that she didn't expect a "thank you" from her either way as the shrine maiden disappears.
Marisa: Confused by the youkai's relaxed expression, Marisa asks her about her connection to the recent incident, to which Manami responds by telling that the only thing she has done is not stop the ones who are causing it. However, she then offers to tell Marisa a bit more about these people if she manages to give her a good fight.
Deciding to go with this plan, the magician attacks the ushi-oni standing in her way, defeating her after a somewhat long and hard match as she was forced to double her efforts due to her opponent's misfortune-inducing abilities. Marisa then listens on as Manami then tells the tale of her two friends, the Soga sisters Kuniko and Mariko, telling of how they turned from human to youkai as well as revealing their plan to take over Gensokyo after the crimson veil overtakes both the sky and the Hakurei Border.
The magician grins a bit as she thinks about what manner of secret abilities and possible treasures the two might be hiding, to which Manami responds with a frown, telling Marisa to go and stop the Soga sisters instead of thinking about robbing them. Before she could leave, the ushi-oni tells her that they might actually give her something in return if she manages to sway them from their current plan, though Marisa herself doubts she'd be lucky enough to get anything from people she plans to blast with a Master Spark.
Sanae: Introducing herself in turn to the youkai as she remembers a few things about ushi-oni and the amount of trouble they can cause, Sanae then asks Manami to tell her what she knows about the people behind the crimson color of the sky as well as the sudden increase in hostile youkai activity. The ushi-oni offers to tell her about the people involved, but only if the shrine maiden gives her a good fight.
Seeing no other choice, Sanae moves on to attack, soon noticing the aura of misfortune around her foe as well as her array of darkness and water spellcards. After a brief but intense fight, Manami gives Sanae a slight grin and congratulates her, though the smirk fades as she goes on to telling the tale of her two friends, Soga no Kuniko and Soga no Mariko, who had once been shrine maidens like Sanae.
However, after they turned from human to youkai, they were hated by both, and the older sister swore revenge, setting her plan in motion as she discovered some kind of forgotten ritual to summon up vengeful spirits. Realizing the trouble all this could cause, Sanae tells Manami that she will have to stop her friends before they can do any damage, only to hear from the ushi-oni that she does want to see her friends do something else than pursue revenge. With that, Sanae continues on her way forward.
As the three heroines move onward and defeat each enemy that steps in their way, they soon are attacked by an unusually large crimson spirit, though even this doesn't stop their advance as they exterminate it on the way. However, they soon come to the conclusion that only one of them should really go and face the Soga sisters. If the first one falls, the two others will rush over to fight the enemy before things could go any worse. After the winner had been decided, the given heroine begins to venture towards the seemingly abandoned Soga shrine hidden in the Forest of Magic.
Venturing deeper into the woods as she approaches the Soga Shrine, the heroine is confronted by an army of youkai that had been drawn to the area, seemingly to protect it from intruders. Cutting her way through, she is then confronted by a youkai with the appearance of a young girl, whom she soon identifies as Soga no Mariko, the younger of the two Soga sisters. She explains to the heroine that the crimson spirits are those of forgotten, vengeful gods and spirits who had only been able to be called forth with a special ritual.
Reimu: Seeing one of the main causes of the incident standing right in front of her, Reimu ignores the mentions of the ritual and demands Mariko to tell her what she knows of the person who had damaged her shrine. Revealing herself as the culprit, the youkai admits that she didn't enjoy doing so, but had to do it to keep Reimu and the others busy as she had attacked places such as the Moriya shrine.
Frowning at the response she got, the shrine maiden orders Mariko to step aside, only to be stopped as the younger Soga sister glares at her. She doesn't intend to let anyone stop her sister Kuniko from finishing the ritual, as it had gotten this far already. Summoning a Hōju that she claims to have stolen from another youkai in hand, the girl then attacks Reimu with an array of water and illusion spellcards, drawing upon the wish-granting power of the Hōju to empower her attacks even more.
However, the shrine maiden soon overpowers her opponent with her mastery of spellcards, defeating her foe in spite of the artifact she had in hand. As the smoke clears from the aftermath of the battle, Reimu realizes that her foe had escaped, but she ventures on regardless, a determined look on her face as she intends to beat down Soga no Kuniko for the troubles she had caused.
Marisa: Guessing that the opponent in front of her was indeed the younger Soga sister, Marisa asks the youkai to step out of the way as she intends to go and stop Kuniko from finishing her ritual. Frowning at the magician's attitude, Mariko asks her if she is angry over the fact that she had tricked both Patchouli and Alice into attacking her, to which Marisa responds with an angered glare.
Stating that she will have to beat Mariko up a bit for the damage she did before moving over to Kuniko, she then looks on in slight awe as the youkai summons a Hōju in hand, intending to use the artifacts power to defeat the magician. The long and hard spellcard duel ends as Marisa fires a bullet that knocks the Hōju from Mariko's hands, forcing her to retreat despite her injuries. Noticing this, the magician carries onward with a slight grin on her face.
Sanae: As she confronts Mariko and listens on as she explains how the ritual works, Sanae asks the girl to go and tell her sister to stop the ritual before it can be finished. The youkai refuses, telling her that the humans and youkai who rejected the two of them deserve all the trouble that they and the spirits working with them have caused.
Frowning at this, Sanae takes out her spellcards though hesitates a bit as she sees a Hōju appearing in her opponent's hand, an item the youkai claims to have stolen from another being not too long ago. Mariko brags that nothing can beat the wishes granted by the magical orb in her hand, and the spellcard between the two begins. However, Sanae emerges victorious, proclaiming that not even a thousand wishes can beat the power of a miracle as she sees her opponent run off towards the shrine.
As the heroine draws ever closer towards the Soga Shrine, she finds a large cluster of the crimson spirits gathering up to make one final attack against the intruder, only to be cleared out by a massive danmaku barrage. The final obstacle standing in the way of the heroine is Mariko, who stands guard at the entrance to the shrine, making it clear to her that she won't let anyone hurt her sister Kuniko.
Reimu: The shrine maiden frowns as the younger sister stands in her way again, clearly annoyed by the girl's stubborn attitude. Mariko's attack is desperate but futile, and Reimu soon arrives at the center of the crimson glow, where Soga no Kuniko herself stands. Looking at the shrine maiden with a frown on her face, the youkai tells her that she won't let anyone stop her now that she's gotten this far.
Reimu responds by telling her that her revenge will bring her nothing, and that both she and Mariko will have to fix the damage done to her shrine. Kuniko calls the shrine maiden out on her selfishness, saying that she shall be the first to fall. Reimu eventually manages to overcome Kuniko's fire spellcards, the crimson magic energy she was drawing power from as well as her ability to invoke fear in others, walking over to the former shrine maiden turned youkai as she lied down on her knees and cried bitter tears after her defeat.
Marisa: Surprised by Mariko's return, Marisa grins a bit as she tells her that she's coming through either way. After a short battle against the desperate younger sister, the magician is confronted by Soga no Kuniko herself, who greets her with an angered glare as she realizes that the magician has come here to stop her plan from succeeding.
Admitting that she doesn't care about Kuniko's motivation, the magician readies herself as her opponent takes out her spellcards while mocking her opponent's ignorant and "human" attitude, though Marisa mentions that she is fighting "just an Ordinary Magician", after all. Facing the full force of Kuniko's attacks, Marisa finally defeats the former shrine maiden, ruining her plan of taking revenge as her ritual is distrupted and the crimson spirits around Gensokyo are forced back to the afterlife.
Sanae: Ordering the younger Soga sister to stand aside, Sanae is forced to fight off Mariko's desperate barrage of danmaku before reaching Soga no Kuniko, who questions the shrine maiden's motives while telling proudly of the days when she used to hunt youkai while she was still a human in a cruel twist of irony.
Sanae tells her that the younger sister needs to fix the damage she had done, and that they should both give up trying to get revenge despite their past dealings with humans and youkai. Kuniko dismisses this with anger, saying neither side deserves any better than the plan she has had in store for them this whole time. Facing the former shrine maiden's array of fire, divinity and fear-powered spellcards, Sanae defeats her after a long and hard battle, approaching the defeated Kuniko as she cried.
Two weeks after the crimson sky incident, the heroines hear about the rebuilding of the Soga shrine that was started by Manami Shimizu and some other youkai, having been invited to come and see this for themselves by Mariko. However, as they arrive at the spot, Kuniko suddenly confronts them and asks them to go and check up on the person who had originally given her the crimson ritual scroll, a death spirit named Chrysanthe who lives near Muenzuka with her tsukumogami friend.
Revealing that the youkai in question was the gun-wielding girl named Abigail Bradley that the heroines had run into while solving the crimson sky incident, they soon head towards the road to Muenzuka, where they see the lingering remnant of the crimson spirits gathering around for some reason. Exterminating them and then moving onward, the heroines are stopped by Abigail herself, who asks why they've suddenly decided to chase her around, grinning a bit as she's holding her guns ready.
Reimu: Noticing the youkai preparing for an attack, Reimu tells her to either step aside or bring her mistress to the scene. Telling the shrine maiden that she won't let her pass from here without a fight nor bother her mistress, the two have a quick duel which ends in Abigail's defeat. However, before Reimu could catch up to her again, a woman with violet hair and yellow eyes wearing glasses steps in the shrine maiden's way.
Identifying her as the death spirit Chrysanthe, Reimu informs her that she's doing some extra youkai extermination, to which the death spirit herself responds with a slight grin as she wonders why a shrine maiden would go this far into Muenzuka for that. Taunting the shrine maiden to attacking her, the two have a long and hard duel which ends in the Chrysanthe's defeat.
However, the woman expresses happiness over the fact that she had such a good fight, and promises not to cause trouble (at least in a while) as she assumes this is why Reimu came to fight her in the first place. Before the shrine maiden leaves, she tells Chrysanthe not to come anywhere near her shrine, but the woman gives her a mere maybe on this before leaving to help out Abigail, who was defeated earlier and had been ready to step in for another attack.
Marisa: Having a slight smirk on her face as she sees Abigail preparing an attack, Marisa suddenly tells her that she's actually after someone else again, but also admits she won't mind playing around for a while. Realizing that the magician was likely after her mistress Chrysanthe, the youkai tells Marisa that she'll have to go home once they're done playing around while giving her a wicked grin.
However, Marisa defeats Abigail soon enough and moves on, seeing the death spirit herself approach. She congratulates the magician for being able to beat her prized gun, but then shifts her tone to a slightly angrier one as she demands she also pay for any damage she might have done. Responding to this with a maybe, Marisa proceeds to challenge Chrysanthe, who tells her that the duel between her dark spellcards and the magicians light-based spellcards should be interesting enough.
The battle between the two carries on for a while, but Marisa eventually succeeds in defeating Chrysanthe. Impressed by her opponent's abilities, the death spirit gives an amused laugh as her opponent humbly admits to being just an ordinary magician. Offering to share some of her old tomes with her, Chrysanthe asks if the two could have another match in the future, to which Marisa answers with a maybe while the death spirit decides to go over and help Abigail, who the magician beat earlier.
Sanae: Telling Abigail that she's here to see the girl's mistress, Sanae notices the youkai keeping her guns ready and informs her that she doesn't want to waste time fighting her. As danmaku begins to fly her way, the shrine maiden shifts to defend herself, defeating Abigail and then continuing to look for Chrysanthe.
However, the death spirit herself soon appears to greet her, curious as to why the Moriya shrine maiden is doing so far away from her home. Sanae explains that she came here to make sure Chrysanthe will not be causing trouble after handing Kuniko the crimson ritual scroll. The death spirit tells the shrine maiden that she'll consider it if she will entertain her with a duel, and the two do battle, with Sanae emerging victorious. Clearly impressed by her foe, Chrysanthe tells her to send regards to the resident gods while asking if she might be able to visit in the future, to which Sanae answers with uncertainty while the death spirit decides to go and fetch Abigail.
